"Why are
kids with ADHD & ADD
often the best Rapid Readers?"
Every school teacher
knows who they are. The kids in the back row who don't pay
attention. The ones with the shortest attention span. Also,
they are the ones who struggle to read. These are the
ones who have ADHD or ADD.
If you go to any high
school in the country, you'll find that a high percentage of these kids
are doing poorly in their school classes. Quite often they are
poor readers. So how is it that SO MANY of them end up being the best in the class whenever any of them takes a speed
reading class?
It all has to do with how
the brain works. Let me explain.
Our brains are divided
into two halves. Each half functions separately from the other
half, yet the job that each half does is helpful for the whole brain to
do its job. The Left half of our brain is more methodical and
analyzes things in a step-by-step fashion. The Right half is more
intuitive and can cover much information in a short span of time.
The fact is, that most of
us are more Left-Brain dominant. And since "normal reading" is
processed in the Left side of the brain, we tend to do well
with the regular way of reading (word-by-word reading). That is all
fine and well, but the problem for the ADHD and ADD crowd, is that they
are Right-Brain dominant. And they have more trouble processing written
words in a one-at-a-time sequence (remember, that is a Left-Brain
activity).
Fortunately for the
Right-Brained kids, their brains are ideally suited to read
rapidly. This is because speed reading is also processed in the
Right-Brain. And this is where the ADHDers have most of their
connections.
"So, are you saying that
they will read better if they go FASTER rather than SLOW?" you
may ask.
Yep. That's exactly
what I'm saying.
But what do we normally
do in schools to "help" these kids? We do the worst thing possible. We
slow them down to a crawl. And when that doesn't work, we
slow them down even more. No wonder so many of them get
brainwashed into believing that they are dumb, or even stupid.
I can't tell you how many
times I've had an ADHD or ADD student in one of my rapid reading
classes. Often they are dragged in by their mom, against their
will. I clearly recall one 13-year old girl. She was very
resentful for being made to come to my reading workshop.
Fortunately for her, I had a bag of candy and lots of contests
and fun. She liked the candy and "faked" an interest in order to
win some more treats. Within 10 minutes or so, she started to
realize that speed reading was no joke. She was the best in the
class. After the workshop was over, she was all smiles and
confessed to me that this was the first time in her life that she had
ever enjoyed reading.
She wasn't talking about
the treats, either. She was honestly understanding the written
word without any trouble, for the first time ever, and it was thrilling
for her.
Her mom was happy, too.
You see, kids with ADHD
are usually quite smart (some sources say that a high percentage of
them have IQ's of over 130). Their moms and dads know this, and
they want to find a way to help their kids fulfill their potential.
Speed reading is one of the easiest and quickest ways to help
your son or daughter improve grades, boost self-esteem and break
the fetters that keep them chained to the bottom of the class.

FAQ's
Q. Should I try a computerized Reading
Fluency program for my ADHD child?
A. The computerized speed reading programs are
popular. And it's cool the way they can flash the words at a
predetermined rate on the monitor. But when you get away from the
screen, you'll have to rely on your own skills to do the job of seeing
all those words smoothly and quickly. This skill is best developed the
old-fashioned way: in books.
Computer programs
amount to a crutch that doesn't exist in books, magazines, and
newspapers. The computer programs can have some value, of course,
but the progress that I've witnessed from computer programs is not as
great as that which I've seen from following the Speed Reading 4
Kids methods. That's
why SR4K has a moneyback guarantee.
Q. This sounds too
good to be true.
A. World-famous expert Jeffrey Freed, MAT, said this in his book Right-Brained
Children in a Left-Brained World: "Right-Brained
children, almost without exception, make the best speed readers."
If you will take the time and effort to teach
a few ADHD/ADD children to read rapidly (as I
have), you will notice the same pattern that I've noticed: It is
common for these children to attain reading rates of over 2,000
words per minute with good comprehension. By comparison, the
average college graduate reads about 300 wpm.
