Urea paste is something I read about that is supposed to dissolve the infected nail and leave the healthy nail alone.

Found this website on the topic.

I have a fingernail fungus on one of my fingers and what I would do is clean it with peroxide but it would still be sore. My aunt gave me Revlon professional Cuticle Massage Night Cream and I’m using it and in a day or so it took the soreness away. I and it’s eating the fungus away. Try it, it works and it’s only about $6.00.

Hello George;

That hard dry stuff around the edges of your feet is the same fungus that gets under your toenails and fingernails.

Golden Seal is very powerfull against fungus and bacteria.

A bottle of golden seal capsules will cost about $15 to $20 and will last a long time.  It does not get old and you should not mix anything with it except a sweetner such as honey, sugar or other natural sweetner if you are going to drink a tea made of it.

I have used Golden seal for twenty years or more and at one time grew my own.  I do not recomend you try to grow Golden Seal unless you know how.

I have not been to a Doctor except my Eye Doctor for glasses in years.  I am 74 years old and what I am going to list below is my own expericnce with it for myself, my children, my grand children and brothers and sisters and some friends.

For fungus on your feet, under your toenails,on your hands and under your fingernails Put four Golden Seal capsules in a coffee mug and pour boiling water on it leaving enough space at the top of the mug so you can stir it with a spoon after the capsules dissolve. Let it steep for about 20 minutes and stir it good a couple times. I use a pan that is long enough and wide enough to put both feet in and I put hot tap water [not so hot that it is uncomfortable] enough to cover the affected area when my feet are in the pan. Then I pour the Golden Seal tea into this water and soak my feet about 30 minutes.  Don`t rinse them just let them air dry.

And DON`T put the same socks back on because the fungus spores are in the socks. And be sure to put some DR. Scholls or Lotrimin AF foot powder in all your shoes and boots or any other things that you might wear on your feet before you put any of them back on your feet because the fungus spores are in them.

This solution will soak up under the nails and kill the fungus. Just for good measure I do this two or three days in in a row.

If you have fungus on your hands and or under your fingernails do the same thing.

Now you cannot get away from fungus spores. They are in the air, in your carpet,on the ground and in the grass so, you could have a reoccurance some time down the road and if you do just repeat the above.I have no side effects from Golden Seal and it is a lot cheaper and quicker than taking drugs,  and it is natural.

Golden Seal used to be in the national pharmacopia.

For a head cold I use one capsule and fix it the same way as above and sweeten it with 2 or 3 tablespoons of honey.

REMEMBER THIS. DO NOT GIVE HONEY TO CHILDREN UNDER ONE YEAR OLD, BEST TO WAIT UNTIL TWO YEARS OLD.

Golden Seal has a slightly bitter and earthy tast and some people and children do not like the tast of it. My Daughter mixes it with orange juice or some other drink [not Coke and things like that] they like.  For her three to six year olds she gives them four or five teaspoons.

I have had my head so stuffed up with a cold that I could hardly breath thru my nose and about twenty minutes after I drink a cup of Golden Seal tea my head would be clear as a bell.  Golden Seal also repairs and strengthens the mucus membranes and therefore increases resistance to alergins, and bacteria.

And I think it also works for virus because a bad cold is a virus and that`s why you have heard that you can`t cure a cold but the doctors may give you an antibiotic to guard against a secondary bacterial infection.  I have run out of space. If you want to hear about my experince with colloidal silver and charcoal, E-mail me.

treating, for several years, with some success, toenails on both feet (most were originally infected, now only 3or 4 (on the smaller toes))

*found vinegar to not work (even diligently & correctly applied for months)

*dissolved copper pennies in vinegar (copper is a fungicide)- still didn't work

*Lamisil works very well, saw greatest improvement - but unable to clean them all up.

*Vicks vapor rub soaks through the nail, more normal appearance. Only using every couple of days, but might be effective if more regular?

*Penlac- no clear impact at regular usuage, still using remainder 1x per week

*clorax - semi-diluted - no apparent impact

*Colgate simply white - tooth (teeth) whitener, contains a urea peroxide oxygenating agent, might work since fungus lives in anoxic location? (just starting using) *urea lotion (40%) no clear impact, but only using periodically (2-3x week?). Definitely softens skin.

I tried Cidex for 3 months, with no results. I went to Walgreens, and the two formulations that they had: one was tolnaftate in solution. the other was benzylkonium chloried 0.1%.

Both sound reasonable. I bet 1/2 strength bleach would work, if you soaked for 5 minutes a day. This level would probably not turn your skin to soap,

The following preparation is quite efficient.

02% phenol

05% salicylic acid

05% acetic acid

10% benzoic acid

10% lactic acid

qsp 100 ml 1% iodized 95 degrees alcohol (add 1% iodized 95 degrees alcohol to make 100 ml)

Local application once a week or twice a week at most with a Qtip or one drop between toes or over nail or affected skin surface after bath or soaking feet. Application should be pursued all year long, including winter time, even when the lesion seems to have healed.

Results on toenail take time since nails grow rather slowly. For quicker results, since the nail becomes brittle in this disease, better unroof nail top surface to disclose the underlying diseased part. This ensures a direct access for the preparation to reach the infective agent. Unroofing the nail surface discloses a brittle whitish or dark coarse surface with powder like or filamentous content. Apply the preparattion on this disclosed surface for best results.

Mycosis needs to be treated for long periods of time since it flurishes in conditions of heat, humidity and alcaline medium (sweat and summer time).

Beware, don’t you ever apply this preparation on mucous membranes (nostrils, eyes, mouth, genitalia, ...).

I was reading your toenail fungus site. I do not have a new remedy, but I just want to say that I had athletes' foot and toenail problems, and I tried the urine thing and it worked. I have not bothered to read up on why it is supposed to work, but it worked for me. The only additional thing that I did was dry my feet well, even between toes, with a hair dryer after coming out of the bath or shower.

Cured my very longstanding infection with ordinary alcohol solution of Iodine applied every night and allowed to dry. Not very pretty on Caucasian skin but what the hell? Don't cut the treatment short. The fungus seems to penetrate deeply. After-care means regular foot wash and fungicide powder. Don't forget it is possible to acquire reinfection from footware if this is neglected.

I have been clear for three years now.

Hope this might help somebody. Best wishes

I have been using Fungi -Cide. It's a professional Fungi-Cide. It can be purchased at Sally Beauty Supply stores. I don't know where else you can get it. It costs around $8.00 for 1 fl oz bottle. It said to use it twice a day. I have been using it 3 to 4 times a day. I also soak my nails in peroxide once every couple days. It is almost gone. I have only done this for a week and my nails are about 50% better. I also keep cutting my nails down as far as I can.

no problem - I have had this nail fungus for over a couple years. I had left it and kept wearing my artificial nails. It had got so bad I was afraid of loosing what real nails I had so I decided it would be best to take them off & apply the fungus-cide. I still wear my nail polish to hide it from everyone knowing I have it. I remove the nail polish every couple days. Wash my hands real good with soap and water, then I soak them in peroxide for a few minutes, wash again. Then make sure they are completely dry before applying the fungus-cide. I apply another coat after my nails dry. Then I apply a nail hardener (two coats drying between), let that dry & apply a coat of nail polish.

George, Thanks so much for answering. What works very well is Diflucan. It is not much of a problem because it is a low dose once a week and monitoring is not needed. After three months your nails will come out clear. I have known people that got cured by using topical tincture of iodine. Here in Florida the important thing to do is prevention. Unfortunately, men have to wear socks and shoes that trap the moist. Most women are giving up panty hoses.

I am going to have my cousin check on the speed reading. She's a senior but is already working and wants to do her master in reading.

Thanks again,

Thanks for your web site describing toenail fungus remedies. I'd like to suggest two additions to your site.

1) I used Q-tips to apply treatments to my toenails until I tried a natural "remedy" (which really didn't seem that effective). The bottle had a small brush which seemed to apply the lotion in a much more effective way. Unfortunately the brush handle was flimsy and broke before the bottle was finished. So here's my tip:

Use a mascara brush.

I buy mine at a "dollar store" and clean off the mascara on the new brush with alcohol. Then I use it for my vinegar or tea-tree oil applications. The brush I'm using now has been intact for over four months. Believe me... brushes are better than cotton swabs!

2) The cheapest place I've found tea-tree oil is Trader Joes. They sell 1 oz. bottles of Desert Essence tea-tree oil for $5.95.

Thanks for listening!

Dear George:

Sometimes it depends on the individual. They need to look at the dietary excesses like sugars, starches, wheat and other allergic reaction producing foods, like especially milk products. But, I have tried this on children to adults, and it has never failed.

I used castor oil to stop the burning, if they have burning urine as a result of sugars, then lots of water. Often, they will also have skin eruptions of some sort, often called incurable, because they never address their dietary excesses. I used to use Shaklee Alfalfa tablets, three days and scabies , flaking, etc is gone. However, the Shaklee products have changed somewhat, so I'm not sure if they work in the same way.

I also took Shaklee to get rid of digestive problems traveling. It made it worse for one hour, then eliminated it.

Hi George!

Your website has been a godsend for me - it's really what the internet should be - a way for us all to share information instead of for people to sell us things.

Anyway, I wanted you to know that I had some Tinactin spray (for athlete's foot), and, after reading one of your entries, I tried it on my toenail, even though it said it was not effective on nails. It has been only one month and the difference is startling! (I had tried many of your other recommendations with no effect) So I wanted to share with everyone to try it - it's not expensive, and I expect there's a brand-X version of it (tolnaftate) too.

On another subject, I also ridded myself of crippling heel pain by buying a $4.99 Aeroflex insole with heel cup. The difference was immediate and so far it's lasted for three months.

Good luck all and keep sharing!

Dr. George:

I thought you might be interested in another point of view. I have had friends call me for remedies many times over the years because they know I am a devotee of all things natural. And, when their doctors don't help, they resort to me.

Simply put, the fungus cannot grow in a hostile environment. Sugars, fermented things (wines, alcoholic beverages, vinegars, catsup, mustard, things prepared with fermented things) reach a point in the body where they cannot be eliminated naturally through the liver and kidney function. Then, they leave through the skin and sweat and provide a feast for surface yeast, which grows rapidly. Take this dietary advantage away, and they disappear within two to three days... always drinking lots of water to cleanse and activate the kidney function.

When we get older, we have assaulted the body elimination system so long that it is less capable being surrounded by an overabundance of these sugars. Also, this is the cause for burning urine. The burn can be aided by castor oil, but can only be stopped by water and eliminating sugars - especially refined sugars and products of any kind. Dark brown, honey and any other natural sugar like Palm Sugars, do not act the same in the body. Carbonated beverages assault the digestion in many, many ways and be causative as well.

You are what you eat.

Many regards, and thank you for caring enough for putting up the web site.

Thanks, George. I passed your site to a friend who is also going to try the vinegar first and then if it doesn't work, maybe the Vicks. And, this will tickle your funnybone,... A little fringe benefit I just discovered with the vinegar. We have a baby puppy who follows me around slashing at my ankles with his needle teeth and he hasn't done that today! (Ahhh, sweet relief! Ha ha)

Thank you again, I am so grateful for your help. I've had such a long seige with this really bad nail. especially that one big toe has been so painful that I wear sandals year around. We live in Tucson so I can do that but, although it might be imagination, it feels better after three vinegar soaks with a Q tip. I'll let you know in a month or so if I can see healing. Keep up the good work!

Please add this least expensive solution:

For Fungus before it gets too severe...eating away under fingernails and toenails..

Basic Principle: It is very important to not use the same tool to clean under the nails.

After getting clean in a shower or bath, use a tooth pick (new end for each nail) to clean out the fungus (white stuff) and any dirt, This way you don't spread anything from one nail to another. Throwaway the toothpicks. Continue for 2-3 weeks to see noticeable difference.

You..don't have to do this every day, but after several weeks of doing it, the erosion under the nail disappears...and the nail becomes healthy looking again... I use one end of the tooth pick for one nail, the other for the next nail...so requires 10 toothpicks for both hands and feet. Now since it clears up quickly, it will not cost a lot of tooth picks.

Catch the fungus early. This stopped fungus growing pretty significantly under a big toe nail, and many times under less significant growth of fungus in nails...don't know if it would work with very advanced stages of toenail fungus. Continue the practice of not using the same tool for a different nail as long as one uses a tool to clean under one's nails.

thank you so much for the valuable and fabulous information on your website!! I just went to the dermatologist and was prescribed a nail lacquer to paint on my toenail. It cost $180 for a little bottle, luckily my insurance covered it. Nonetheless, I'd always prefer to stick with natural, inexpensive remedies especially because I am pregnant.

For women, it's difficult because we wear more open toed shoes. I've had to resort to putting a fake nail on my toenail! Looks okay though.

Thank you again for the information!

Hi, George!

I am very happy with the information on your site. What I didn't see was this: Vaseline or other petroleum jelly. My mother says she used petroleum jelly on her toenails after I mentioned that their yellowing was probably due to fungus. She showed them to me, nice and clean looking and said that she had used vaseline every day (I think morning and night) for a year, and now they are beautiful.

George:

I had toe fungus on my left "big toe" for approximately 3 years. I tried the topical solution from drug stores; however, they never seemed to work.

I was on-line shopping and getting information for Lamisil when I came across your webpage. I decided to try Hydrogen Peroxide; because I had an old bottle here. I started noticing a difference in 3 days and in about 2 weeks, my toe was totally clear of any fungus.

Thank you, so much for that information.

Hi George,

I have this on my thumb nail and several of my toes.

My step-mom told me a Dr. told her to get a toothbrush and some cleanser and scrub the infected toes everytime you get in the shower. He said it would take months, but not to give up. I guess I have been doing this maybe 6 months now and seemingly not getting anywhere. It is drying to the skin also.

Then I got more determined to get rid of this stuff. About 6 weeks ago I started using nail clippers and just cutting every bit of the nail off that I possibly could, every time I thought about it, thinking the fungus was just caught underneath. I cut it off and work and at home.

My thumbnail is half grown out now. I am so excited because it has been so soar for serveral years. It's really starting to look really good and healthy. I paint my other fingernails, but no my thumbnail. I don't want to give it any reason to return too soon.

But now my toenails have shown no progress at all. Maybe because I wear polish on them all the time because they are so ugly. They also have white streaks in them. It also hard to cut stuff off my little toe nails.

Now that I have had some success with my finger, I will not give up on my toes.

Thanks so much for your website, I might try some of your suggestions on my toes.

On a related note, I read something in the paper today about the pH of the oceans increasing. The relevant point is that the increments on the pH scale are exponential, like the numbers on the Richter scale for earthquakes. So lemon juice should be even more effective than vinegar. However, it also means its more corrosive, too. I'm not diluting it. We'll see in a couple weeks if I'm suffering adverse effects from acid burns.

As I understand it, the biggest problem with nail fungus is that it's under the bed (that's why the cremes don't work). PResumably the acid somehow penetrates the nail, but I'm a little skeptical. I have no idea what's going on with Vicks vaporub. Stay tuned

I ran across your site while trying to find the recipe for the cornmeal cure for toenail fungus which I heard just the tail end of on NPR last Monday, July 4th. I don't recall what time of day it was, but your site is very interesting and I've already started this vinegar cure - I only had cider vinegar on hand and after a 30 minute soak, I used a chore girl brass pot scrubber on my callouses and all over my feet and the acid from the vinegar had loosened it up so well that I don't have any dry skin on my feet now. That alone is worth a soak in vinegar. I had no idea!

But what I caught of the cornmeal cure is this (but I didn't hear how often or how long it takes to complete):

Take a 15 inch square or rectangular pan and fill with hot water. Soak cornmeal in the water until it is a paste. Soak your feet in this paste for one hour. When you rinse your feet, supposedly all the yellow from the fungus is gone from your toenails, which I think they meant the fungus is now gone, but I didn't hear the whole broadcast--I think it was a call in show--but I am not sure.

If you are able to research this further I would love to hear back from you what the whole story is. I'll keep looking and send it on if I find it.

Thanks,

N. R.

This is more for the none squemesh people. I was was once a compounder at a pharmicutical company which means i mixed the chemicals together to make the topical medicians most people use.  Well as i was there i started to realize that 99% of the creams we made were only 1% of the active ingrediant and wondered why that is and wouldnt be better if there was a higher percentage for these drugs ...it might work better.  I at the time had toenail fungus and have tried many products like fungi-nail which we made at our plant under contract. (by the way it got recalled by the fda because it didnt work :\).  So anyways my doctor gave me nizoral which is the equivalent of lamisil...so i assume.these drugs can produce liver problems, which i didnt want to risk.  I proceeded to remove the nail of my toe knowing the importance of what i was going to do. If u want a "one time fix" you have to be able to reach all of the fungus.  I then took three nizoral tablets crushed and used a razor blade to powderize it ,which is important if you want a good mix.then grab any lotion in the house ...if u look, most all med creams and lotions have the same ingredients minus the active ingredient..they are all made to penetrate the skin.  So basicly you put down a dab of lotion next to the powder and use the razorblade to mix the two together .  Use a chopping motion to mix it together until u have a uniform paste, you will see some powder left in it ..that is the talc powder that most pills have to have the active ingredient a solid (.aka -pill.)apply it to the infected area force it in to the cuticle area an folds of skin as much as you can, any area left undone may have a spore, which it can grow back from.  I did this in one treatment and have not have it since on that toe, two years later i got it on my other big toe ..again same treatment, same result.  one treatment--one result...gone.

I hope this helps every one of you :

George:

Thanks for your oregano advice.  I had been using Tea Tree oil for 6 months with no results.  However, when I combined it with oil of oregano-the black fungus spots on my toe nail started to fade away.  With weekly nail filing and clipping the combination of oils appears to be working.  I now have the most miniscule dark spot and the rest of the nail is clear and clean.  I will continue this approach until all discoloration is gone.  Next month will mark a year since I began with the Tea Tree oil.

For your info:  tea tree oil is known to penetrate nails and skin.  I think it serves as a carrier for the oregano oil.

An additional thought:  dentists use clove oil as a disinfectant.  Maybe that is another remedy.

Hi,

I just thought you might like some verification of one of the home remedies for nail fungus that you listed on your site. Being an economically challenged individual, I opted for the cheapest remedy that I saw listed, the hydrogen peroxide one. I apply the hydrogen peroxide by soaking a cotton ball which I then place upon the affected nail, then I place a finger cut from a surgical rubber glove over both cotton ball and digit and leave the arrangement in place for two or more hours or even overnight. I do this to ensure that the hydrogen peroxide has plenty of time to soak through the nail. I'm pleased to report that I have healthy nail growing out now and the spread of the fungus has been curtailed. I will continue the treatment until all of the discolored portion has grown out. I was thinking of trying the Vicks Vaporub treatment but I didn't want a dark nail. It's summer! Sandals, barefeet, shorts.....you know.

Thanks for having the compassion to make a website addressed to solving this perplexing problem.

PS. I'm somewhat of a speed-reader and have been since I was a child. I currently read on average one book a day.

I noticed that you said urine was a cure for nail fungus. I've been living with my boyfriend for 6 years, and I've never caught the serious fungus that he has on all of his toenails. This may sound gross, but I always urinate in the shower. It's really not as gross as it sounds, because urine is sterile, it's really the idea of it that is gross. Anyway, I've never caught his fungus.

Hi George,

I was reading your website on toenail fungus and when I got to the part about the urine I almost fell out of my chair. My older sister got a horrid case of athlete's foot which turned into a fungal skin infection. She had heard that urine helped cure athlete's foot, so she decided to give it a try. Her foot was completely cleared up in less than a week. She said she applied her own urine once a day (just pouring it over her foot). There may actually be some truth to that. If it wiped out the fungal infection on her skin, it would make sense that it would have the same sort of effect on a toenail (over a longer period of time and perhaps a different method of application of course). Thank you for your wonderful site.

...Thank you for your informative site - it's funny that a number of the treatments are also used for fungus infections ("thrush") in horse hooves. While number of the horse remedies might work nicely for humans too, the side effects are probably unacceptable. One of the most popular hoof treatments around our area, "Thrushbuster", turns everything an intense, brilliant, permanant purple - and people were complaining about Vicks! BTW, Vicks Vaporub is one of the best things we've found for horses who have gotten scrapes, sores, or skin fungus-induced bald spots - it helps them grow the hair back like you wouldn't believe. We don't know why, just that it does.

Try saltwater to cure toenail fungus! I went to the ocean this summer on vacation with my family, and spent a total of 4 hours in the ocean. A day later I noticed that my toenails looked normal. The fungus was gone, and it stayed away for 2 months. Since I live inland, I could't get more seawater, so I tried using a saturated solution of pickling salt and water in a foot massage unit for one hour. Again, the fungus was gone with one treatment. Cheap enough for you?
